The first quarter finals match of the Euro 2008 brings us Portugal Vs Germany. This match promisses to be an explosive match with both sides not having much problem progressing to the quarter finals.
Germany opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Poland, 1-2 lost to Croatia and a 1-0 win over Austria. The Germans best players in the first around are Lukas Podolski and Michael Ballack. Podolski has 3 goals to his name so far in the tournament.
Other worrying facts for Germany are, Joachim Loew the manager for Germany will not be on the bench after he was kicked out from the touch-line in the match where Germany beat Austria 1-0.
Lukas Podolski and Torsten Frings might not start day as they are recovering from calf and broken ribs injuries respectively. The Germans really need to pull their socks up if they ever want to upset the might Portugal. To make progress, the German forwards must show greater sharpness in front of goal, while the defence must keeps the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo under close watch.
Meanwhile Portugal has the luxury of more rest compared to the Germans as they won their first 2 matches. Portugal defeated Turkey 2-0 and defeated Czech Republic 3-1 in their first 2 matches. Portugal lost 0-2 to Switzerland virtually changing the entire midfield and attack.
Once again, the Portuguese will be banking on their stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao Sabrosa to carry them through.
With Portugal determined to play the ball around and Germany eager to launch swift breaks, it has the makings of an excellent match.
Changes
- Germany coach Joachim Loew is expected to replace Mario Gomez with midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger who returns after suspension.
- Lukas Podolski is expected to partner Miroslav Klose up front from the left side of midfield.
- Scolari will revert his team again to the line-up that started the first two matches against Turkey and Czech Republic
Key Statistics
- Portugal’s lost to Switzerland 0-2 was only the second time in 22 matches they have failed to score. Could it be the 2nd time in 23 matches?
- Portugal have not lost in their two previous European Championships Finals matches with Germany – a 0-0 draw in 1984 and a 3-0 win in 2000 with a hat-trick by Sergio Conceicao.

When the Portuguese learn that POWER and REWSOLVE always win over fancy cuteness, maybe they’ll win when the going gets tough. Otherwise forgert it. Sempre a mesma cantiga. Nao tem aquilo que rima com baloes. Learn from the Dutch and the German.

Ballack pushed off the defender. The ref and lineman missed it. The goal should not have counted. Oh well, they’re human too. What pisses me off is that the commentators overlooked it with instant replay and show great favoratism to Germany.

C.Ronaldo should take some italian lessons on simulations. It was such a gay simulation by him in the second half! Portugal deserved to lose!!!

Nani and Postiga should have been playing from the start. Maybe next time. Now it’s GO Spain, GO.

I’ve seen my sister’s football team play better defence on free-kicks than the Portuguese did. Klose was onside by a mile, and the commentators did mention later on in the replays that Ballack gave the chap a little shove from behind but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that Portgual played horrendously. And Cristiano Ronaldo being a little twat and faking being stomped on? He should’ve been carded for that twattery.

ballack is on fire!!!

I’d quite like the Portuguese team, were it not for drama queen Ronaldo. As it stands: hup hup Germany

Schweinsteiger is an Animal! Great performance by Germany… Sorry Portugal but your defense was lacking and you were out played by the germans bigggggg time.
By Stella on Jun 21, 2008 | Reply
Oh by the way… Ronaldo needs to take some acting lessons if he wants to perfect his diving skills… I think everyone seen thru his dramatic performance… so not cool.

are you fucking nuts? there was someone else offside but klose. you are fucking dumb….you dont know anything about football

Yeah… the Dutch… the Dutch are going home now. No power, no resolve

Portugal lost because we didnt play well, and mainly because the refereer missed the push by Ballack, without that goal it would have been 2-2.
So 2-2 with Portugal playing badly, guess what could have been when playing good?
Portugal was superior because of these facts.
By Nederlandman16 on Jun 24, 2008 | Reply
no you idiot. look at klose whe the ball is played. he’s onside by a mile.
C. Ronaldo is ridiculous. the refs should start handing out yellows for diving again.
